Postal authorities recover mail from Unicoi Route

By Betty Chandler

April 22, 2008

On Friday, April 4, 2008, a special agent with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) recovered U.S. Mail from the residence of a former postal employee in the north end of Unicoi County.A notice from the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, Southeast Area Field Office in Knoxville has been sent to residents of the Unicoi area stating that all of the recovered U.S. Mail was documented. The letter was sent to persons who had mail recovered with their names on it. Postal patrons were sent all of the pieces of recovered U.S. Mail with their addresses affixed.

The letter further states that postal patrons were being sent a questionnaire to complete and return in an enclosed postage paid envelope. Depending on the response of the victims, the information submitted will be input into the DOJ Victim Notification System. Once the information is documented in the Department of Justice Victim Notification System, patrons will be advised of possible court events and outcomes. Your response may be used for possible criminal prosecution of the responsible party.

The letter is signed by Lance Gregory, Special Agent for the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General.

On the attached questionnaire sent to postal patrons by the Office of the Inspector General, postal patrons receiving the document are asked for their full names and full mailing addresses; telephone numbers; and e-mail addresses.

The questionnaire asks if postal patrons know the individual suspect. It further asks if patrons gave the man permission to dispose or open the U.S. Mail that has been returned to postal patrons.

The questionnaire asks if patrons had suffered a financial loss because they failed to receive mail in a timely manner. It further asks if patrons know of other U.S. Mail that was mailed to them that they did not receive, and if unauthorized charges have been posted to the patrons’ check or credit card accounts.
