Football season got off to a strong start Saturday morning for the players who plan to participate in the EJAA or YMCA football leagues.
Approximately 80 boys participated in a clinic conducted by the UCHS football coaches and players at Gentry Stadium.
The UCHS players and coaches stressed the game’s fundamentals to the participants and put the players through numerous football drills.
The coaches said that they believed the clinic would benefit the EJAA and YMCA programs as well as benefiting the UCHS program.
After the clinic ended, the YMCA players met at the YMCA for a uniform fitting conducted by Action Athletics out of Kingsport. YMCA Program Director Lisa White said that observing the 30 plus boys who signed up for YMCA football was “a very exciting sight”.
“We are trying to help build the football program in Unicoi County,” White added. “The YMCA is also trying to make a difference in the lives of children spiritually and in all other parts of their lives.”
“Our main goal, through all our programs, is to meet the needs of the families in Unicoi County.”
White also said that the YMCA league will consist of two teams. Beginning in September they will play on Monday nights at the UCHS track.
